How to Clean and Care for Your Sheepskin

A genuine sheepskin is built to last — and a little routine care keeps it soft, full, and looking its best for years. Here is everything you need to know.

The weekly basics

Give your sheepskin a good shake and let it air regularly. This keeps the fleece lofty and stops dust from settling in. A gentle brush with a wide-tooth comb lifts and separates the wool between deeper cleans.

Dealing with spills and marks

Act quickly: blot, do not rub, with a clean cloth. For small marks, use a damp cloth with a little wool detergent diluted in cool water, then wipe with clean water and let it dry naturally — never on a radiator or in direct heat.

When it needs a full wash

Hand-wash in cool water with a dedicated wool or sheepskin shampoo. Skip hot water, bleach, regular detergent, and the tumble dryer — heat felts the wool and stiffens the hide. Lay flat to dry away from heat, and brush gently as it dries to bring back the loft.

Keep colors true

Dyed sheepskins can fade in strong UV light, so keep them out of harsh, direct sun. Ivory is the natural, undyed color and the most light-stable.
