Icelandic rams come in many looks with variations in color, pattern, conformation, and horning. Above are pictures that shows "Aslan" and "Rambo" (no longer with us), both of which carry Moorit even though they look very different. They are in full fall fleece. Aslan comes from line that have strong horning on both sides while Rambo is from both a ram and a ewe who are polled. Both horned and polled types of Icelandic lines are appropriate in both rams and ewes and are maintained as characteristic of the breed. At Nordicsheep we have worked hard to keep separate lines of both horned and polled rams and ewes. Both horned and polled Icelandic sheep have their own charm. The many different colors and patterns the Icelandics carry and show they pass on to their offspring. It has be said that 80 percent of the genetic quality of a flock comes from the ram while the twinning, mothering skills, and temperament comes from the ewe. While I am not sure that that is always true, it is very important to start with a good ram. The rams used for this years lambs represent a cross section of the colors and types (both horned and polled) that will insure a broad genetic base for a flock. We will continue to add rams each year with different combinations of color and pattern and strive for the best examples of each quality exhibited in Icelandic sheep as a breed.
